Drought Assistance

On 16 October 2006, the Australian Government announced a further commitment of $350 million for Exceptional Circumstances (EC) drought assistance. This package entitles all eligible producers in 18 EC declared areas to receive an extension to their income support and interest rate subsidies until 31 March 2008.

On 24 October 2006, the Government announced an additional drought assistance package of $560 million in addition to the $350 million announced on 16 October and the $1.2 billion already provided over the past 5 years.

Assistance is available to farmers and small business operators that have been affected by the drought.  Following are examples of just some of the types of assistance that is available:

1.     Interest rate subsidies for farmers
2.     Interest rate subsidies for small business
3.     Welfare support – assistance for farmers
4.     Welfare support – assistance for small business
5.     Professional business & financial planning grants
6.     Transport Subsidies
7.     Carry on Loans
8.     Rural Counselling Services
